CANISTER AT 300
|

Original 30"x 40" Acrylic/Canvas Painting
Found in the Collection of Dr. Paul Olson of Provo, Utah
|
 |
Historical Background:
Canister shot/grape shot (cast iron balls, 1" in diameter) was employed as a final defensive fire
when in danger of being overrun by the enemy.
The soldiers of the United States Army's 4th Artillery Regiment played a crucial role in defeating
General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army forces at the Battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania.
The 4th Artillery received highest honors for their gallant, stubborn stand, including the
first awarding of the new Congressional Medal of Honor. It was given to a sergeant in "A"
Battery, 4th Artillery, for his bravery at the "Fish Hook."
Dr. Paul Olson, Provo, Utah, (the gentleman who commissioned the painting) was painted as
the captain (up behind the "six pounder" howitzer).

His father was painted as the gun chief
(sergeant giving the fire command), and his three brothers painted as the howitzer's firing
crew. Paul's son and son-in-law (behind him) were portrayed as members of a "sharp shooter"
regiment.
Artist Frank Thomas, in 1966 & 1967 (Ft Riley, Kansas, and Vietnam) proudly served as the
1st Lieutenant executive officer of "A" Battery, 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery, 9th
Infantry Division, in the Mekong River Delta. This 4th Artillery unit was descended from
that original Civil War artillery regiment described above.
