Original 48"x 60" Acrylic/Canvas Painting found in the Reed Zobrist personal collection, Las Vegas, Nevada

On the fateful morning of 25 June 1844 the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum left Nauvoo, bound for Carthage, Illinois. They were going to turn themselves in to Governor Thomas Ford and the Hancock County Authorities, on a charge of treason for having declared martial law in Nauvoo, to protect his city. As they were leaving their fair city, by the Mississippi River, Joseph, looking about, declared that he was going "like a lamb to the slaughter." On 27 June, Joseph and Hyrum were martyred at the hands of a rogue militia and lawless mob while incarcerated in the Carthage Jail.

"Like most of the Lord's anointed in ancient times, [Joseph] has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum"..."They lived for glory; they died for glory; and glory is their eternal reward. From age to age shall their names go down to posterity as gems for the sanctified" (Doctrine &Covenants 135:3,6).
