"BAGHDAD EXPRESS"

Special Operations Assault into Iraq

by U.S. Army Combat Artist Frank M. Thomas (LTC)

Original 36"x 54" Acrylic/Canvas Painting
found in Collection of U.S. Army Center of Military History, Washington, D.C.

CUTTING THE BASRA HIGHWAY

Background:
Special Operations/Delta Force commando teams were used extensively in the days before and during Operation Desert Storm. They performed small team assaults into Iraq and Iraqi occupied Kuwait, to eliminate high priority targets, etc. The Special Operations helicopters were heavily equipped with electronics designed to jam enemy radar, thereby, making our aircraft invisible in the night sky. This CH-47 Chinook helicopter has delivered its load to an undisclosed location deep in Iraq, but was detected by enemy spotlights and then fired upon. The crew chief is returning fire with his M-60 machine gun stinger.
