ARTILLERY RAID

Background:
"The artillery raid is the rapid movement of artillery assets by air or ground into a position to attack a high-priority target with artillery fires." (para F-8, FM 6-50) Detailed planning, surprise, and speed in execution are key factors in the conduct of an artillery raid.

With a combat ready weight of 16,000 lbs., the M198, 155mm, howitzer can be transported by the CH-47 series helicopter. Because of its fire-power capabilities, this weapon has proven to be very effective in destroying high priority targets when used in artillery raid missions.

This painting depicts M198 howitzers conducting an air assault, artillery raid into a position across the Forward Edge of the Battle Area (FEBA), during combat operations. These soldiers are capable of a very limited defensive capability during this risky type of operation.

Their lives depend upon their professional ability to quickly lay (prepare) their guns, fire the set number of rounds prescribed for the target, then get their weapons out...all before the enemy can detect their presence and bring devastating counter-battery fire back upon them
