"The Last Paiute Chief"
Chief McKay Pikyavit 1930 - 2004 (Corn Creek Band)

By Frank M. Thomas

Historical Background:
Chief McKay Pikyavit (1920 - 2004), Corn Creek Band of the Paiute American Indian Tribe (central/southern Utah). I (the artist) knew McKay for about 15-20 years and always thought of him as a friend. He once told me of having been taught by his father to make a bow and arrows in the 'old way' and then was taken deer hunting into the mountain canyons east of the Reservation near Kanosh, Utah. He was a good, stalwart man, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a law enforcement officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Paiutes and members of the Pikyavit family commissioned this portrait painting. I was pleased and proud to be the selected artist. His brother, Phil Pikyavit, was appointed to serve as the Corn Creek Band chairman after McKay's retirement, since they no longer felt the need for a chief.
