"AUTUMN BLUSH"
Johnathon Apples Ready for Harvest
By Frank M. Thomas
Original Art Canvas, 6 sq. ft. (36" x 24") In the Artist's collection

Background:
The apple is the fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family Rosaceae. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits world-wide. The tree is small and deciduous, reaching 16-28 feet tall, with a broad, often densely twiggy crown. The leaves are simple ovals with an acute tip, serrated margin and a slightly downy underside. The smooth, almost polished, upper side easily reflects the sun's brilliance. Flowers are produced in spring simultaneous with the budding of the leaves. The flowers are white with a gradually fading pink tinge. The fruit matures in autumn.
The tree originated from Asia, where its wild ancestor is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known types (or cultivars) of apples with a vast range of desired characteristics.
At least 58 million tons of apples were grown worldwide in 2007. China produced about two-fifths of this total. The United States is the second leading world-wide apple producer. The well known, fabled story of "Johnnie Apple Seed" originated on the Ohio frontier almost two hundred years ago.
This painting (without story or action) is one of the very few still-life pieces ever produced by Artist Frank Thomas
